Instead, store bins to the side so that children have plenty of space to work. You might use a large table, but avoid keeping bins on it. Locate your math center near the manipulatives or the block area. Children should be able to use these to practice basic math skills such as measuring, counting, patterning, and sorting. Your math center should be a place for experimenting with real objects, and you should have these objects in multiples. Hands-on experiences using math in real-life situations abound as children explore the use of measuring devices to solve problems and create their own understanding of the world. Probably the most tool-rich environment of your classroom, the math center can be a hub of activity and fun. Whether they're using apples or Unifix cubes, children love to measure and weigh.
